Prosper Data Breach Impacts Over 17 Million Individuals

Peer-to-peer lending platform Prosper has confirmed a significant data breach affecting an estimated 17.6 million users, according to the breach notification service Have I Been Pwned (HIBP). The breach, first disclosed by Prosper in September, involved unauthorized access to its internal network and the exfiltration of sensitive customer data, although the company maintains that no financial accounts were compromised.

Discovery and Containment of the Breach

Prosper reported that the attack involved threat actors gaining access to its internal systems and querying databases containing confidential and personal customer information. The company emphasized that no direct access to user accounts or funds was detected.

“There is no evidence of unauthorized access to customer accounts and funds, and our customer-facing operations continue uninterrupted,” Prosper said in a public statement.

The incident was contained shortly after discovery, with no new unauthorized activity observed since September 2, 2025. Prosper promptly notified law enforcement and engaged cybersecurity experts to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Nature and Scale of the Compromised Data

While Prosper has not released a full list of affected data types, it did confirm that Social Security numbers were among the compromised details. Analysis by Have I Been Pwned indicates that the exposed dataset includes a wide range of sensitive information:

  • Full names and physical addresses

  • Email addresses and IP addresses

  • Dates of birth and government identification numbers

  • Employment and income details

  • Credit status indicators

  • Browser and user agent data

The leaked dataset has now been added to HIBP’s searchable database, allowing users to verify whether their information was compromised.

Impact and Response Measures

Prosper stated that it is still conducting a comprehensive forensic review to determine the scope of the breach and notify affected individuals. Once confirmed, the company plans to offer free credit monitoring and identity protection services to impacted customers.

“We continuously monitor accounts and have strong safeguards in place to protect customers’ funds,” Prosper said. “We are also working with law enforcement and cybersecurity partners to ensure this incident is fully remediated.”

Broader Implications

The Prosper breach highlights the increasing risks faced by financial technology (FinTech) companies, which handle sensitive personal and financial data. Even when customer funds remain secure, the exposure of identity-related data—such as SSNs and income information—can lead to downstream risks like identity theft and credit fraud.

Experts recommend that affected users monitor their financial statements, enable multi-factor authentication, and use credit freezes to prevent unauthorized account openings.
